T

he Alpaca Barn Shop

at AzSu Alpacas features handmade alpaca giftware which includes shawls, sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves, handbags and much more - all made from the beautiful fibre of our own alpacas, soft and luxurious.

AzSu Alpacas is an environmentally aware farm.  Alpacas themselves are extremely eco friendly which is why we call them our ECO-ALPACAS.   When blending with the alpaca we use natural fibres such as:  three shades of pima cotton, (the soil in which the pima cotton is grown high in the Andes naturally produces these shades),  silk or tencel (which comes from the bark of trees) linen, bamboo and small amounts of merino.

The fibre does not require harsh chemicals to wash the fleece as they do not contain lanolin like sheep and indeed when hand spinning our  yarns we spin first then hand wash after.  In some cases we have even spun the yarn and knitted the garment before washing the item.

Pictures of our herd sires from whom the fleece we use originates can be seen on the AzSu Alpacas web site.

Su Lenk, founder of AzSu Alpacas and The Alpaca Barn shop started as an alpaca livestock breeder in 1998 and was known for her expertise in camelid husbandry and the superb Peruvian bloodlines of her award winning herd.

She travelled extensively in Peru learning about alpacas and their fibre, including visiting the Peruvian textile mills. She also travelled frequently to Italy and Paris to the fashion yarn and trend shows, enhancing her designs for the forthcoming seasons.

Following her untimely death in September 2010 the enterprise is being carried forward by Su's daughter Nikki who has been inspired by her mother's passion for these wonderful animals.
